Veteran Sportswriter Starts Freelance Venture
Veteran sportswriter Nate Allen resigned his Razorbacks bureau post with Donrey Media Group on June 24 to start Nate Allen Sports Service, a freelance reporting business. He has already contracted to provide University of Arkansas athletics coverage for eight papers and is in negotiations with several more.
Allen has covered the Razorbacks since 1973 — for the The Springdale News (1973-76), Arkansas Gazette (1976-90) and Donrey (1990-2001). He declined to disclose financial information regarding the venture but said he is excited about going into business for himself.
“I could be eating beans, but at least I’ll be doing what I want instead of what a corporation wants,” Allen said.
Among the papers that will subscribe to Allen’s services are Wehco Media Group’s subsidiary The Palmer Group, which includes newspapers in Hot Springs, Texarkana, El Dorado, Camden and Magnolia. Allen also has deals with the Northwest Arkansas Times in Fayetteville, the Jonesboro Sun and Conway’s Log Cabin Democrat.
While working at Donrey, Allen’s work was published in the chain’s Arkansas papers, including the The Morning News, Pine Bluff Commercial and Southwest Times Record of Fort Smith.
