Traveler Changes Printers After Cost Increase
The student newspaper at the University of Arkansas switched printers in July after Community Publishers Inc. of Bentonville increased its printing cost by 34 percent.
The Arkansas Traveler awarded its new printing contract to the Press Argus-Courier, a Donrey Media Group newspaper in Van Buren.
Jeff Smith, editor of the Traveler, said CPI had been printing the Traveler at its Northwest Arkansas Times building in Fayetteville but shifted that job to its Bentonville facility last year. CPI has formed an “alliance” with Wehco Media Group of Little Rock that has apparently affected its printing operation. Wehco owns the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
“Their new bid was really high, and they added a lot of clauses in there that were really unrealistic,” Smith said of CPI.
With the change, the Traveler shifted to pagination so its pages can be sent via computer to Van Buren to be printed.
In the fall, the Traveler will begin publishing on Thursdays in addition to the three weekdays it published last year (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). During the summer, the Traveler publishes one newspaper a week.
The Traveler has also added a professional advertising manager, Christi Treece, who began work July 1.
The Press Argus-Courier began publishing the Traveler on July 11.
