Big Guy?s Subs
900 SW “A” St.
Bentonville
Take a big appetite to Big Guy’s Subs in Bentonville. Our party of four did, and we were not disappointed.
The restaurant’s only a few blocks from downtown Bentonville, and is easily accessible for lunch goers in a rush. You’ll also notice the swift and friendly service, which usually includes placing orders with Brian “Big Guy” Down himself.
All four diners ordered six-inch sub sandwiches, of which Big Guy has 28 varieties that range in price from $3.79 to $4.59 and include such classics as “The Godfather” and “Queen B.”
The foot-long versions go for $6 to $7.69. But with 23 subs under $4, it’s hard to beat Big Guy’s prices.
We found the service to be just as pleasing, although Big Guy’s isn’t really a traditional sit-down restaurant. It’s fast food, which we normally don’t review, but based on Big Guy’s popularity and the fact it’s a locally owned eatery, we couldn’t resist.
We started with jalapeno garlic cheese bread ($2.10) as an appetizer, and the consensus was it’s simply “awesome.” One comment made at the table was, “Man, it’s amazing how something so simple can taste so good.”
We each grabbed a bag of chips for 89 cents each, and large drinks are $1.30. We’re always picky about iced tea, but Big Guy’s passes the mustard, er … make that “muster.”
Our first diner ordered the “Tootles Catch” ($3.99), a tuna salad sandwich with bacon, mozzarella, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. He said it was both unusual and tasty.
A financial industry buddy invited along for the review got the smoked turkey sub ($3.79). It comes with lettuce, tomato and mayo. It was his first visit to Big Guy’s, and the financial whiz said he was very impressed.
Another diner, who said he looks forward to business trips to Bentonville just so he can fill up on a Big Guy’s sub, took a personal suggestion from Down. The diner ordered the Kickin’ Chicken ($4.59), which comes with bacon, jalapenos, hot pepper cheese, ranch dressing and barbecue sauce. Our diner called the fare “superb.”
Our final companion, a retail vendor, said he really enjoyed the Reuben ($3.79). That sub comes with the traditional corned beef, kraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing. He described it as, “real good,” slipping into a deep Southern drawl to accentuate the praise. n
Big Guy’s offers a number of side orders and desserts. They range in price from under a buck to $3.
For an extra 50 cents on orders under $6, Big Guy’s delivers. But if you do have time to stop by, it always delivers in-house, too.
