Husband-and-wife art collectors John and Darcy Gay couldn’t resist Northwest Arkansas. After John Gay retired from a career of manufacturing Toyotas in California, the couple searched for the perfect community for their new art gallery and frame shop. Northwest Arkansas’ growth and the location of Village on the Creeks in Rogers fit, and the Gays opened The Village Gallery in November.
“Northwest Arkansas is the best-kept secret in the nation,” John Gay said.
Offering original works, some from local artists, the 1,800-SF gallery features about 80 framed pieces and more than 300 unframed works. Individual prices range from $50 to $1,500.
Local artist Gene Franks and John Bell Jr. of Fort Smith exhibits oil paintings of historical street scenes.
Gay adds a unique touch to the gallery by providing custom frames for the art. In 1999, Gay studied framing at The Larson-Juhl Framing School in Atlanta. The two-week course taught him to professionally mat and frame different styles of work.
Prices for the custom framing start at about $35 and climb, depending on the size and quality of the art. Because the shop uses a digital mat cutter, the turnaround time is about two weeks.
