JBU Starts Web-Based Christian Radio Station
World Wide Web users can get their fill of contemporary Christian music through John Brown University’s radio Web site, www.klrc.com. Cutting a deal with BroadcastAmerica.com, station manager Sean Sawatzky started the live Internet radio feed for free.
Trading regular name announcement and Web site advertising space for software and equipment, JBU has saved between $10,000 and $12,000, Sawatzky said. BroadcastAmerica.com broadcasts the virtual signal to listeners anywhere in the world, a far cry from KLRC’s 6,000-watt station, 101.1 FM, in Siloam Springs.
The online host company serves hundreds of radio and television stations nationwide.
In 1996, JBU uploaded www.krlc .com, proclaiming the site as Arkansas’ first Christian radio Web site. Sawatzky looked for a cost-effective way to run the radio feed for almost four years before the agreement with BroadcastAmerica.com appeared.
JBU signed a three-year contract with BroadcastAmerica.com, agreeing to announce the host’s sponsorship 10 times each day. Other than the contracted commercials, the Web radio station remains advertisement-free.
