Newsprint Is a Terrible Thing to Waste
The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas has been running some gigantic photographs in the “Our Town” section in an obvious effort to fill an excess of news pages. Normally, we like large photographs but many of these should have been left on the darkroom floor.
The section is “zoned” for the different cities in the area, meaning the news in the section is allegedly tailored to each city in its circulation area. The issue we get says “Fayetteville News” in large type at the top of the page.
On March 2, the entire front page of the “Fayetteville News” section was devoted to a photo spread on the Arts Center of the Ozarks’ Ball at the Mall. The ACO is in Springdale, but since the dance was held at the Northwest Arkansas Mall, which is in Fayetteville (barely), the event warranted blanket coverage on the front of the “Fayetteville News” section.
Meanwhile, on the same day, the front page of the “Springdale News” section carried a story about Louise Rozier, a University of Arkansas instructor who translated the book “The Little Jesus of Sicily” from Italian into English.
Rozier has no connection with Springdale. And the Morning News ran pictures from the ACO ball inside the “Springdale News” section that day instead of on the front page. Perhaps the articles were inadvertently placed in the wrong zoned sections.
