Retailer will open in new CMN Business Park II

Kohl’s Corp. plans to build an 80,000-SF department store in Fay-etteville’s CMN Business Park II, across the Fulbright Expressway from the headquarters of StaffMark Inc. The store — the company’s first in Arkansas — is slated for a spring 2001 opening.

Jim Irwin, co-owner of Irwin & Saviers Co., a Little Rock-based real estate company, says construction should begin this fall. Irwin served as the broker for the real estate transaction. He says the Kohl’s store will be in a 125,000-SF strip mall.

So far, only roads and bridges have been under construction at the 309-acre site.

As of Jan. 1, the value-priced retailer operated 259 department stores, primarily in 22 states in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. The company says the stores carry quality, national-brand merchandise targeted at middle-income customers. Kohl’s is based in Menomonee Falls, Wis., a suburb of Milwaukee.

Kohl’s sells apparel, shoes, soft home products and housewares. Kohl’s stores are located in strip shopping centers, community and regional malls, and as freestanding units.

Kohl’s plans to open between 55 and 60 new stores this year.

Total sales for December (a five-week period) were $856.8 million, up from $682.8 million a year earlier. For the 48 weeks ended Jan. 1, the company’s total sales were up 23.6 percent while comparable-store sales increased 7.8 percent.
