Loud, rowdy noise makes David Johnson grin. His new business, Big Harry’s Music City in Fayetteville, wears out his smiling cheeks as people wander in to play various live instruments.

Drums and guitars, tuned for playing, pack the store’s 2,000-SF showroom, and Johnson said he wants customers to come into the store for a hands-on experience.

“Instruments are like shoes,” Johnson said, “you’ve got to try them on to see if you like them.”

An electric guitar player himself, the owner stocks Big Harry’s with brand names like Rivera amplifiers, Ludwig drums and GNL handmade guitars, and Johnson accepts special orders.

Total starting costs for Big Harry’s Music City topped $150,000, and Johnson said the initial response has been pleasing.

Johnson said he originally opened the business because he could order instruments from Houston, Texas, for a lower price than he could buy them in Northwest Arkansas.

Before opening the music store, Johnson worked in several different industries including meat operations for a grocery chain and furniture sales.
