Hugo’s Restaurant
Our office lunch at Hugo’s was a smart choice. Hidden down a flight of stairs on Fayetteville’s Block Avenue, Hugo’s offers small tables and good food.
Antiques and neon signs complemented the cozy lighting in the diner.
An order of the Macho Nachos ($5) got our table started, and the heap of chips, cheese, peppers and tomatoes made us wonder whether we would be able to eat the main courses we’d ordered. Although the appetizer wasn’t piping hot when it arrived, the peppers more than made up for the lost heat. We were surprised, however, that the nachos didn’t include beef.
Our spread of entrees arrived quickly after our nachos were depleted, and each member of our party was satisfied.
One diner ordered the traditional hamburger ($4).
“It was a very good basic hamburger,” he said between bites. Potato chips accompanied each of the main courses.
Another diner simply ordered a basket of Hugo’s homemade french fries ($2). Skins left on, the fries were delivered hot. Although the fries weren’t her favorite, she said they were good.
The choice of our third guest was the BLT on whole wheat ($3). The sandwich was delicious, and the bacon was well-cooked, not flimsy, while the lettuce was crisp.
With only a little room to spare, we shared an order of peach and amaretto crepes ($4), complete with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Bites of the delicacy melted in our mouths, and the dessert finished the meal in style.
Service was consistent and quick, but we really wish Hugo’s could support a non-smoking section for the cafe. Lunch take-out ordering is somewhat unreliable because the kitchen stops preparing to-go orders when the dining room fills.
Hugo’s is a friendly place to hop into if the Fayetteville downtown square is your lunch location.
