It may soon require less paperwork to be a sports agent in Arkansas.
The National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws is holding drafting committee meetings on its Uniform Sports Agent Act on Feb. 19-21 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Richmond, Va. Chief among the items being considered is a proposal to establish a national registration for sports agents.
Currently, registration and regulations are left up to individual states. Twenty-seven states, including Arkansas and all of its contiguous states, require some form of registration.
Uniform national registration and regulations would make it less costly and cumbersome for agents to be tested, bonded and licensed in numerous states. Kevin Scanlon, an agent at Stephens Sports Management Inc. of Little Rock, says the proposal would also make the industry easier to police.
