JBU raises $8 million for family center
John Brown University in Siloam Springs has raised more than $8 million to fund a new program on campus that will be called the Center for Marriage and Family Services.
The fundraising effort began last October with a $500,000 initial donation. About $2 million of the money raised will go toward construction of an $8.5 million Campus Community Center, which, among other things, will house the Center for Marriage and Family Services. Construction is expected to begin next year. The remaining $6 million will be used as an endowment to run the program.
The Center for Marriage and Family Services will work to build strong marriage and family relationships through teaching students, training counselors, assisting church leaders and providing Christian counseling.
Through the Center, students may earn master’s degrees in marriage and family therapy. The center will also offer seminars and programs on marriage and family relationships.
Also in October, JBU announced the public phase of a $32.5 million fundraising campaign. The campaign’s steering committee raised $18.6 million during a “silent phase” that began two years earlier. The university is trying to raise the remaining $13.9 million by the end of 1999. The campaign will help fund the construction of the Campus Community Center and a $4 million science building.
