D-G job, paper hires Arnold

At a time when the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette seems to be able to hire away any reporter or editor it wants, it appears that money doesn’t talk to everyone.

Charlie Alison, the night metro editor for the Morning News of Northwest Arkansas, recently turned down a 50 percent pay raise to become an editorial writer in the D-G’s Northwest Arkansas office.

Alison says his loyalty to both the Morning News and executive editor, Jim Morriss, outweigh the pay raise.

“I realize the job I have is a pretty good one, both who I work for and what I do in the job,” says Alison. “And that’s what kept me here.”

Since it couldn’t get Alison, the D-G hired George Arnold for the position. Arnold was previously managing editor of the El Dorado News-Times. In the 1980s, he served as managing editor of the Benton County Daily Democrat, which later became the Benton County Daily Record.
