Location matters: Business Matters Moves South, Wins Award

We’d like to congratulate Northwest Arkansas Business Matters for winning the “award of distinguished journalism” for non-deadline magazine reporting at a recent regional Society of Professional Journalists meeting in Memphis.
A house ad that was published in the June 7 issue of Business Matters said the award “recognizes excellence in journalism within a 250-mile radius of Memphis.”
We were curious about this, because, according to our map, Memphis is 340 highway miles from Springdale, where Business Matters is based. We checked statute miles (as the crow flies) and Springdale was still outside the 250-mile radius by about 10 miles.
When we asked Jim Willis, president of the Mid-South Chapter of SPJ about this, he said the entry was “submitted by the Little Rock Arkansas Democrat-Gazette … and they paid the fees, so we went ahead and accepted it.”
Little Rock is 137 miles from Memphis.
