Helping Hands Inc. of Bentonville received a $1.7 million mortgage from the Bank of Bentonville on May 5 to finance the construction of a new building along Airport Road in Bentonville.

The mortgage was signed by Gent Wittenberg as president of the organization and B.J. Raney as secretary. The loan is secured with the organization’s current building at 1004 N.W. 11th St. and 10 acres the organization has bought for the new building.

Construction of the 45,000-SF building is scheduled to begin next month and will take about seven months to complete. Plans for the building are pending approval by the city planning commission.

Helping Hands bought the 10 acres in February for $375,000 from Materials Unlimited. The purchase was financed with a $175,000 mortgage from the Bank of Bentonville. The organization has listed its current 17,000-SF building for sale for $475,000.

Helping Hands is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1976 and is sponsored by 22 churches in Benton County. The organization raises money to help needy families by selling donated items in a thrift shop. Last year, the organization gave more than $700,000 in aid.
