A 21,000-SF Circuit City store will be open by mid-July in Fayetteville’s Spring Creek Centre, says Morgan Stewart, a spokesman for the Richmond, Va.-based company.

On June 12, Circuit City, the nation’s largest retailer of brand-name consumer electronics and major appliances, opened a store of similar size at 7601 Rogers Ave. in Fort Smith. The Fayetteville and Fort Smith stores are small compared to most for the company, which average about 35,000-SF in size.

Circuit City had two other stores in Arkansas, both in the Little Rock area.

Construction began in January on the Fayetteville store. The $2 million project is being built by Vratsinas Construction Co. of Little Rock.

The Fayetteville Planning Commission approved the design last September. The large-scale development calls for the construction on 2 1/2 acres of land zoned commercial thoroughfare.

Circuit City is a leading retailer of personal computers and music software with annual sales exceeding $8.87 billion. The company has about 560 stores in more than 135 markets throughout the United States.

Circuit City plans to open about 50 superstores in fiscal year 1999. The company’s stores range in size from 15,000 to 45,000-SF, although the the company also operates 3,000-SF mall-based stores named Circuit City Express.

Circuit City, originally named Wards Co., was founded in 1948 by Samuel S. Wurtzel.
