War of the Dopplers: Super Saves Six Minutes
On May 12, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette missed the latest court filings in the long-running lawsuit involving the sale of the Northwest Arkansas Times, so the statewide newspaper buried the story a day later on page 3 in the business section.
For readers who didn’t see it there, the ever-conscientious Democrat-Gazette gave them another chance to read it a day after that on page 5 in the Arkansas section. An Associated Press version of the story ran that day (May 14), confirming our suspicions that news staffers seldom read the business pages.
It’s not like this story doesn’t matter to the Democrat-Gazette’s owner, Walter Hussman. His plans for expansion in Northwest Arkansas apparently hinge on whether the Times is sold to NAT L.C., which is controlled by the Stephens family of Little Rock, which owns the Donrey Media Group, which, in turn, owns the Times’ chief competitor, The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas.
In the filing, lawyers for NAT L.C. asked the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to rehear their case. The story appeared May 12 in both the Times and the Morning News.
