Helping the needy in Benton County seems to be a growth industry.

Helping Hands Inc. of Bentonville plans to more than double the size of its facility with a new 45,000-SF building along Airport Road this year. The non-profit organization currently is housed in a 17,000-SF facility at 1004 N.W. 11th St. in Bentonville.

The organization is sponsored by 22 churches in Bella Vista, Bentonville and Rogers and raises most of its money by selling donated items from a thrift store.

“We need to expand,” says Howard Anderson, manager of the organization. “Our sales have gone up every year.”

The organization has a contract on 10 acres near the Bentonville Airport and has been interviewing local contractors about building the new facility. The new building will house the thrift store as well as provide storage and office space.

Helping Hands began in 1976 and dispensed about $800 in aid to needy families that year. Last year, the organization gave more than $700,000 in aid.
