CaroTrans International, a division of Arkansas Best Corp., formed two new business alliances in January that expand the company’s operations in Puerto Rico and opens markets in Europe.

The company formed an alliance with Wilson Trucking Co. of Fisherville, Va. Wilson Trucking and CaroTrans will work together to market and provide direct door-to-door service between destinations in the United States and Puerto Rico.

CaroTrans is one of the oldest consolidators to Puerto Rico. The company has operated on the island for more than 16 years and has a facility in San Juan. Wilson Trucking has been a regional carrier in the southeastern United States for 71 years and has more than 1,200 employees with 31 terminals.

“We want to form more partnerships with good regional carriers that want to do business in Puerto Rico,” says Andy Sze, president and CEO of CaroTrans.

In Europe, CaroTrans formed an alliance with the Ziegler Group to extend service throughout Europe, Scandinavia, the Mediterranean and parts of Africa. The alliance gives CaroTrans one of the most comprehensive pickup and delivery networks in Europe, says Wayne Schmidt, executive vice president of worldwide services for CaroTrans.

The seaports of Antwerp and Rotterdam in Holland, two of the largest in Europe, will be the primary European hubs for CaroTrans.

The expansion of the European market will mean significant increases in the company’s annual revenue, Sze says.

“We are already seeing that,” he says.

CaroTrans is a division of the Clipper Group of Arkansas Best Corp. CaroTrans is a nonvessel operating common carrier providing import and export, door-to-door and door-to-port service to more than 140 countries and 225 ports worldwide. Other units of the Clipper Group provide intermodal transportation and truckload services.
