Kirkland’s Home Decor, a popular spot for those in need of home furnishings, is leaving its current location at the Scottsdale Center for fresh digs beside Gordmans at the Pinnacle Hills Promenade.

The current location will close April 17.

A soft opening for Kirkland’s new 7,786-SF store is set for April 29, with an official grand opening scheduled May 14-16.

To celebrate, local interior designer Krista Killman will be on hand to offer free interior decorating consultations May 15-16. Sales and giveaways will be featured throughout the weekend.

Eight people are employed at the current location. The Pinnacle Hills Kirkland’s will employ 10-12 people.

Elise Lee, with Luckie Strategic PR in Birmingham, Ala., said “the biggest reason for the move is the opportunity to expand and improve the store layout.” The Pinnacle Hills location “is larger, is going to be more customer friendly, and allows them to grow a little bit.” Kirkland’s Scottsdale Shopping Center space is 5,000-SF.

Lee says home décor is doing quite well these days, and in spite of a sour economy. Lee says Kirkland’s expansionary ways are due in part to the discount options it provides that can’t be found at luxury home décor stores.

Kirkland’s already has nearly 40 openings scheduled across the United States in 2010.

“One big national trend is moving from enclosed stores to outdoor spaces,” she said. “The enclosed mall is not as customer friendly. People can’t drive up to the door.”

Kirkland’s opened its first store in Jackson, Tenn. in 1966. Today the company operates over 291 stores in 32 states.
