The Northwest Arkansas’s 2008 Paint the Town Red event, hosted at the Fayetteville Town Center, raised more than $90,000 for the American Heart Association.

AHA sold more than 1,000 tickets and brought in about $17,000 with the silent auction held during the event.

As the event sponsor, General Mills donated $10,000 of the $90,000 total. Other event sponsors included Wal-Mart Stores Inc., ANB Financial NA and Fayetteville AutoPark.

Mary Beth Oliver, corporate marketing director for the AHA, said the money raised by Paint the Town Red was a 24 percent increase from the $66,197 raised during the 2006 event.

Money raised by the event will go toward medical research and continuing education for local doctors and nurses.

Heart disease and stroke are the number one and number three killers of men and women in the United States.

This is the seventh year for the Paint the Town Red event and Oliver said the group is already planning for next year.
