Craig Rennie, assistant professor of finance at the University of Arkansas, said his Portfolio Management class is beating the pants off Standard & Poor’s 500 benchmark.

For calendar year 2004, the Rebsamen Fund beat the S&P’s 500 index by 19.73 percent with an annualized return of 29.40 percent. The S&P 500 had a 9.67 percent annual return, he said, pointing out that it would put the class in the top one percent of the paid money managers in the country.

The Rebsamen Fund began in 1970 with a $100,000 endowment from Raymond Rebsamen. It was worth $1.24 million on Feb. 9.

Rennie, who insists the students watch CNBC to learn about polish and presentation, will take the class to New York City in March for tours of J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley and the New York Stock Exchange, among other things.
