Mark Golab, Richard Johnson and Tim McCuin are going strong with Eclipse Display, their convention and trade show display business. But Golab said he became dismayed with the lack of personal service and what he considered poor facilities at area gyms.

“I thought, ‘There’s got to be better for this amount of money,'” Golab said.

The three entrepreneurs at first marketed Pulse Fitness to women, thinking the cleanliness, new equipment and personal training services would appeal especially to them. They quickly found that everyone seems to appreciate those features.

Pulse offers a number of fitness and cardio workout classes, and training on the equipment, which includes Cybex Stair Steppers, Cybex Arc Trainers, True Treadmills and more. They also offer child care in the evenings and on Saturdays.

The three invested about $400,000 to start Pulse Fitness. Golab said about $200,000 went into the equipment and another $140,000 was used to renovate the 11,000 SF gym they are leasing in Fayetteville’s Evelyn Hills shopping center. A 10-year business loan financed the startup.

Golab believes the gym will be making a profit by the end of the year and will add to its staff as membership grows. Pulse has eight employees, another seven or eight instructors contracted for exercise classes and two massage therapists who work by appointment.
