James Spencer spent 12 years working his way up the corporate ladder and out of a job he loves. Spencer resigned from the corporate communications world earlier this year to do more “hands on production work.” He soon launched Active Voicing, an audio/video and multimedia production company he’s operating from his Prairie Grove home.

Spencer said he does voice overs for commercials, videos, Web sites and other media.

He’s also made a DVD about home brewing that he plans to soon be marketing in specialty shops for home brewers.

Spencer has certainly not limited himself to local work. Through his Web site, Spencer has been able to attract business from across the country and farther. He’s able to get a job via the Web site, get it done and returned within minutes of the request.

Spencer is in touch with “a loose network of independent producers” he can call upon if needed.

Spencer doesn’t plan to hire employees. He invested $20,000 in duplication and video-production equipment to supplement equipment he already owned when he launched the business. Spencer hopes to begin making a profit on Active Voicing next year.

Prior to working in corporate communications for Tyson Foods, Spencer worked in radio and television.

His home-based production studio is about 1,100 SF.
