Six New Flights To Be Added At XNA
Six new round-trip flights — including three to new destinations — will be added at the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport in Highfill, bringing the total number of daily round-trip flights to 50, said Scott Van Laningham, executive director of the airport.
When American Eagle adds a daily flight to Los Angeles International Airport on Aug. 5, passengers will be able to fly non-stop to either coast daily from XNA.
“It really is amazing,” Van Laningham said. “There are airports probably twice our size with half the destinations. A large part of it is the heavy business traffic.”
In their press releases announcing the new flights, both Northwest Airlines and American Eagle mentioned the vendor traffic to the headquarters of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in Bentonville as a reason for the the additional flights.
“All of that is driving the market,” Van Laningham said.
Comair, a Delta Connection partner, announced on May 6 that it will begin serving XNA on July 1 with two daily roundtrip flights to Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky International Airport and one daily roundtrip flight to Atlanta.
Northwest Airlines said it will begin two daily round-trip flights to Minneapolis, Minn., on Oct. 26.
Van Laningham said enplanements at XNA were up by 6.9 percent in 2002 and about 7.5 percent for the first five months of 2003. Nationally, enplanements were down by about 10 percent from January through May, he said.
