At the one-year anniversary celebration of The Women’s Center at Sparks Health System in Fort Smith, hospital administrators introduced the center’s new digital mammography equipment.

Purchased in part by a $265,000 grant from the William Thomas and May Pitman Hennessey Foundation, the digital mammography equipment cost more than $892,000 to install, according to a press release from Sparks.

During its first year of operation, The Women’s Center conducted more than 13,000 mammograms.

In the release, Dr. Laura Moore-Farrell said the digital imaging capability gives Sparks doctors an edge for diagnosing early-stage breast cancer.

Images obtained with the new equipment are electronically stored on computer and can be manipulated to create a clearer picture of problematic areas.

Sparks and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock are the only two digitally equipped mammographers in Arkansas.
