After operating a trash-hauling service in Kansas for 12 years, Tom Smith returned home to Northwest Arkansas and opened a similar venture called Roll Off Service Inc. Toting commercial, residential and industrial trash, Roll Off Service transports more than 100 loads per week, Smith said.

The business also collects scrap metal, such as crushed cars, to supply a dozen steel mills. Local industrial plants hire Smith to remove leftover metal from their manufacturing lines.

With 14 years in hauling, Smith estimated the Roll Off Service’s initial costs to be more than $1 million, and the business uses 15 trucks and a staff of 28 people.

Roll Off Service operates from an estimated 6,000-SF building that is outfitted for dispatching, repairing and maintaining the trucks. A four-acre parking lot around the office stores the haulers at night.
