Schmieding Center Has Class Openings
The Schmieding Center for Senior Health and Education marked its official opening, albeit in temporary quarters, on July 19 and the center is still accepting enrollment for its first class, which begins Aug. 2.
Although the center will offer training for people interested in becoming aides or who themselves provide care for elderly family members, it also offers other resources to people coping with aging issues.
For example, explains Bettie Miller, one of the center’s employees, there’s an interview room. Families hiring caregivers for relatives may use the room while interviewing potential candidates.
The Schmieding Center was funded with a $13.5 million grant from Springdale’s Schmieding Foundation. It’s currently operating at two locations – the senior health center at 606 Young St., in a building owned by Northwest Health System and the education center at 504 W. Emma Ave.
The two centers expect to merge and operate under one roof in a new building to be completed in 2001.
