Old Navy, a division of Gap Inc. of San Francisco, plans to construct a 25,000-SF store in Fayetteville’s Spring Creek Centre.

Construction is expected to begin by September, and the store should be open by March 2000, says Jay Jesensky, project manager for Developers Diversified Realty Corp. of Ohio, which owns the shopping center.

The store will be adjacent to the building that houses Home Depot, according to documents filed with the Fayetteville Planning Commission. Commissioners approved the large-scale development at their June 28 meeting.

The plat shows the Old Navy adjacent to a Bed, Bath & Beyond store that will move into 32,000 SF on the west side of the Home Depot building. Jesensky says construction of the Bed, Bath & Beyond store will begin in mid-July, and the store should be open by January.

The new building was designed by Steelman Connel Moseley Architects of Little Rock. A 2,000-SF space will also be constructed on the west side of Old Navy.

The decision to open an Old Navy store apparently comes in the wake of impressive sales figures at the Gap store that opened last June in the Northwest Arkansas Mall.

In addition to Gap stores, the 900-store chain has 305 Old Navy stores and 265 Banana Republic stores.

Gap is expanding Old Navy, planning to open between 100 and 200 new stores this year. Old Navy targets lower and middle-income shoppers. Old Navy leads among Gap Inc. chains in same-store sales figures.
