Judge Denzil Price Marshall Jr., has been nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as the U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Arkansas, according to statement from the offices of U.S. Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor.

The vacancy for the federal post was created by the Honorable William R. Wilson assuming senior status.

Marshall has served as a judge on the Arkansas Court of Appeals since 2006. Before joining the Court of Appeals, Marshall practiced law in Jonesboro for 15 years and was a principal with the firm of Barrett and Deacon, according to the statement.

From 1989-1991, Marshall clerked for U.S. Circuit Judge Richard S. Arnold. Since 2004, Marshall has also served as reporter for the Arkansas Supreme Court Committee on Civil Practice. Marshall received bachelor’s degree in 1985 from Arkansas State University, where he serves as adjunct faculty teaching political science. He earned his master’s in 1986 from the London School of Economics and Political Science and his juris doctorate in 1989 from Harvard Law School.

In March, Lincoln, D-Ark., and Pryor, D-Ark., sent letters to Obama recommending nine individuals – including Marshall — for three of Arkansas’s federal district court vacancies.

Once nominated by the President, the candidate for a federal judgeship must testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee and be confirmed by the Senate.
