J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. of Lowell was one of six companies the Environmental Protection Agency named as 2011 SmartWay Champions.

The EPA’s SmartWay program, begun in 2004, seeks to reduce transportation-related emissions by improving supply chain fuel efficiency. As a SmartWay partner, JBHT collaborates with the EPA to measure fuel consumption and carbon footprint, and commits to making annual improvements.

Several factors contributed to J.B. Hunt’s selection as a SmartWay Champion, a news release stated. These included the carrier’s investment in more than 500 lower-emission, fuel-saving trucks; use of logistics solutions such as advanced routing and multimodal operations; sharing data with the EPA to assist SmartWay in the research of multimodal freight operations; and publicly advocating the benefits of sustainability as a core business strategy.

JBHT was recognized at an Oct. 4 ceremony during the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals’ annual global conference in Philadelphia.
