The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith volleyball team isn’t eligible to compete for the Heartland Conference championship this season because of its provisional NCAA Division II status.

Still, the Lady Lions are making their mark on their new league.

UAFS survived a hard-fought second-set loss to beat conference leader St. Edward’s University 3-1 on Thursday night. The Lady Lions won the match 25-19, 29-31, 25-9, 25-22.

The Lady Lions (28-3) own the best overall record in the Heartland Conference and have won all three of their league encounters – Newman University, University of Texas-Permian Basin and St. Edward’s.

St. Edward’s (20-7) leads the conference with an 11-1 record.

Sophomore Heidi Luks of Tallinn, Estonia, and junior Brittany Hunt of San Antonio, Texas, led the Lady Lions with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Junior Lucia Najselova of Nitra, Slovakia, had 43 assists, and sophomore Keely Rivera of Baytown, Texas, had 17 digs to lead four Lady Lions with double-digit kills.

UAFS, which won its 16th consecutive match, will play conference foe Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas, at 7 p.m. on Friday.
