Ross Returning Campaign Cash

Peter Urban with our content partner, Stephens Media, reports that retiring Congressman Mike Ross (D) has stopped raising cash and is giving a chunk of it back.

Reports Urban:

After announcing in July that he would not seek a seventh term, U.S. Rep. Mike Ross, D-Prescott, stopped raising campaign contributions and began to refund them instead.

Within a week, Ross’s campaign returned $126,844 to individuals and political action committees that had contributed to a potential 2012 race, according to his latest Federal Election Commission report.

The refunds, which were distributed by Aug. 1, returned $98,344 collected from individual contributors as well as $28,500 that political action committees contributed toward the general election.

Ross plans to retain the $340,219 in PAC contributions designated for the 2012 primary election, Smith said. Most of those contributions have already gone to cover expenses incurred over the nearly nine months in which Ross was running for re-election.

He closed September with $112,309 remaining in his campaign treasury, according to the third-quarter report filed Saturday with the FEC.

A Ross spokesman said that the Congressman will disburse some of the remaining funds to Democratic candidates as well as some charitable causes.
