Brawner: Congress’ Failure Not Just Debt Ceiling

Steve Brawner with Stephens Media points out that the recent Congressional debate on the debt ceiling is but one area of Washington, D.C. dysfunction.

He notes that highways and educational leadership are two other critical government functions where national bickering and delay are impeding progress. In both areas, Congress is years behind in its reauthorization or changes to critical plans and programs related to our nation’s infrastructure and public schools.

What can voters do? Another election season is approaching, and naturally, voters will be looking for candidates whose values and beliefs most reflect our own.

But what if voters acted like an election season was a job interview and emphasized not only ideological purity but also basic job skills such as the ability to work with others and the ability to complete a task on time? What if we stopped hiring fire-and-brimstone politicians and instead chose accountant- and engineer-types — you know, people who make things add up and get things done?

Four years late on No Child Left Behind. Two years late on a highway bill. And now, an embarrassing debt ceiling debate that resulted in our country losing its sterling credit rating while China justifiably wagged its finger in our direction. It’s time for voters to get their pink slips ready.
