Searcy gains jobs, Prescott loses jobs

From the “Win some, lose some” category, comes the report that Searcy will gain 250 jobs and Prescott will lose 71 jobs in layoff.

Schulze and Burch Biscuit Co. announced Thursday (Mar. 12) plans to locate a 500,000-square-foot toaster pastry production facility in Searcy. The plant, to employ about 250 when operational. will locate in the former Maytag facility and occupy about half the space. Whirlpool closed the plant two years ago after its acquisition of Maytag.

Chicago-based Schulze and Burch manufactures and markets Toast’em Pop-ups and Snackin’ Fruits brands.

In Prescott, Firestone has announced a layoff of 71 employees at the company’s building products plant.

Company officials said the decision is the company’s attempt to deal with the current economic situation and an “unprecedented decline” in construction.
