Rep. McGill announces re-election bid

Rep. George McGill, D-Fort Smith, announced today that he would seek his second term in the Arkansas House of Representatives next year.

McGill, first elected to the seat in 2012, said he wants to continue his work for the city of Fort Smith through his service in the legislature.

"I've been blessed to serve the Fort Smith community in the Legislature," he said. "there are so many wonderful opportunities for Fort Smith and being a part of the work to make those opportunities become reality has been exciting."

The retired insurance agent listed several different accomplishments in his announcement, including assistance in securing more than $1 million for the U.S. Marshals Museum. McGill also pointed to his leadership in "protecting funding for higher education throughout the state" and having the Arkansas Economic Development Team visit Fort Smith.

McGill has previously served as chairman of the Fort Smith Planning Commission and the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board in addition to serving as a commissioner for the Arkansas Prevailing Wage Commission.

No other candidates have yet announced for the District 78 seat, which includes much of north Fort Smith.
