Shane Nichols’ wife, Melissa, worked in sales for a large medical waste disposal company, Stericycle. When the company wanted to transfer her to Memphis, she got out of the business for a time, but she knew that was the industry she wanted to work in.
The couple did some research and consulted with the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center. They ran the numbers and realized they only needed to capture about 1% to 2% of the market, so they decided to form Medex Waste in 2011.
The company started off in their garage, but soon they moved to an old church and then moved into an old fertilizer building. There they were able to build to treat the medical waste onsite and then take it to the landfill. The company also recycles paper and wood pallets.
