Walmart announced Tuesday (Oct. 22) it is delivering medications from its pharmacies in Arkansas, Missouri, New York, Nevada, South Carolina and Wisconsin. The retail giant said the service would be live in 49 states by the end of January. Walmart does not have stores in Hawaii.

“We understand that health care is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s hyper-local. Each community has unique needs. This new offering allows us to continue serving customers while also giving more time back to our pharmacies for high-touch health services,” said Kevin Host, head of pharmacy at Walmart.

Pharmacy delivery is available for new prescriptions along with medication refills. Walmart said offering the service is important because 55% of customers have asked for it over the past couple of years.

Walmart integrated the pharmacy delivery service into its mobile app. There, customers will be able to schedule their pharmacy delivery for a specific time that fits their schedule. The retail giant said it plans to add on-demand express delivery within 30 minutes in the coming months. New or existing insurance plans will be applied to the transaction just as they would when picking up a prescription in-store.

Walmart said it will take customer safety and security precautions with this new service making sure prescriptions are verified by licensed pharmacists according to doctor’s offers. Additional measures remain in place for HIPAA-compliant transport from store to door. Medications will be securely packaged in tamper-evident packaging, and customers can track orders in real time through the Walmart app or website. Once delivered, customers will receive a photo confirmation via the Walmart app and their email.

Walmart said it is available to customers who will pay $9.95 for delivery. Walmart+ members will receive free delivery.
