Anna-Gee Lee, PhD presents:

Clandestine Craft: The Phenomenon of Nüshu

Within the field of secret codes and covert rhetoric lies a cultural phenomenon—Nüshu, which stands for “women’s script.” This written language which has proliferated for hundreds of years was utilized by uneducated rural women in Jiangyong County, Hunan Province, China to communicate, correspond, and cope. Of special interest are the technological feats performed by women in its transmission in diaries and poems. In this presentation Dr. Lee will discuss the future of the practice, its study and share findings and artifacts from her recent trip to China.
