The Walton Family Foundation’s Home Region Program announced Wednesday (May 6) its next five-year plan to guide the foundation’s work in Northwest Arkansas and the Arkansas-Mississippi Delta. The foundation released its previous five-year plan in 2021.

Home Region Strategy 2030 is expected to “expand access to opportunity and prepare communities for a stronger, more prosperous future,” according to a news release. “Over the next five years, the foundation will focus on expanding economic mobility, strengthening education and workforce readiness, investing in community infrastructure and supporting partnerships across the public, private and philanthropic sectors.”

“For generations, our family has believed that opportunity should be within reach for everyone,” said Tom Walton, chair of the Walton Family Foundation. “The strategy reflects that commitment by investing in people, communities and systems to expand opportunity, support growth and drive long-term success.”

The Northwest Arkansas strategy will include strengthening civic infrastructure through investments in housing, transportation and essential systems. The plan also includes support for shared spaces and civic engagement opportunities, so residents can participate in deciding how their communities will grow. The foundation will focus on enhancing economic opportunity and supporting entrepreneurs by expanding access to capital and strengthening education-to-career pathways, enabling residents to gain the skills needed for work in the region.

The Arkansas-Mississippi Delta strategy will emphasize education and economic stability as key drivers of long-term opportunity. The foundation will invest in strengthening the educator workforce and improving access to instructional materials. It will also help expand educational options, such as after-school programs and career learning. Other efforts in the Delta will support economic asset building by increasing pathways to homeownership and financial stability, strengthening workforce connections and enhancing small business resilience.

“The most meaningful progress happens when communities help shape the solutions that affect their future,” said Robert Burns, director of the Walton Family Foundation Home Region Program. “That’s why this work emphasizes collaboration and a forward-focused approach to building thriving, resilient regions.”

The new strategy builds on the foundation’s mission to address complex social and economic challenges through investments in improving community systems, infrastructure and regional collaboration. The vision for the two regions is to enhance the quality of life and ensure residents have the tools and pathways to succeed. In Northwest Arkansas, the goal is for the region to “cement itself as one of the most vibrant and welcoming places in the nation,” the release shows.

In the Delta, the foundation is supporting area leaders driving changes “that ensure all residents can access the resources needed to learn, build assets and lead their communities.”

The Walton Family Foundation was founded by Walmart founders Sam and Helen Walton. The family-led foundation works in three areas: improving education, protecting rivers and oceans and the communities they support, and investing in its home region of Northwest Arkansas and the Arkansas-Mississippi Delta.
