Garland “G David” David Matlock, age 91, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, in his hometown of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Born on November 2, 1933, in Fort Smith to Jesse David Matlock and Amelia Anne (Hale) Matlock, David lived a life marked by service, faith, and deep devotion to his family and community.
On March 5, 1960, David married the love of his life, Carol (Caldwell) Matlock. Together, they shared 65 beautiful years, building a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering commitment to one another and their family.
A proud veteran, David served his country honorably in the Air National Guard in 1961. Following his military service, he worked for the Arkansas Casket Company, dedicating many years to his profession. Outside of work, David lived a life filled with passion and purpose. He was an avid bowler and an active member of the Westark Wildlife Conservation Club. He generously gave his time as a Hunter Safety Instructor, a dedicated volunteer for 30 years with Backpack Meals for Kids, and a proud supporter and scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts of America for many years.
A devout Methodist, David was a cherished member of First United Methodist Church in Fort Smith for 67 years. His faith guided every part of his life, from how he loved others to how he served his community. He had a special connection to nature and found joy in the outdoors, always eager to share his love for creation and conservation with those around him.
Above all, David was a caring man, a devoted husband, and a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His family was his greatest pride, and his legacy lives on in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Amelia Ann and J. David Matlock and his beloved son, Brian D. Matlock.
David is survived by his loving wife, Carol C. Matlock; his daughter, Jennifer Matlock Lewis of North Carolina; and his grandchildren: Lauren Matlock Booker and husband Wes, Bethany Matlock Stewart, Zachary Lewis and wife Erika, and Zane Lewis. He also leaves three great-grandchildren: Clementine, Oliver, and Madeline; his sister, Emily Anne Matlock of Tulsa; and his cousin, Jeanne Jamell of Fort Smith.
David will be remembered for his unwavering faith, generous heart, and steadfast dedication to his family and community. He leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A graveside service will be held in his honor at 10:00 a.m. at the Fort Smith National Cemetery on Friday, May 9, 2025. A celebration of life service will follow at 11:00 am in Roebuck Chapel at First United Methodist Church, Fort Smith. Services entrusted to Lewis Funeral Chapel.
