Walmart CEO to speak at UA spring commencement

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon speaks to University of Arkansas students Wednesday (Dec. 6) during demo day at the McMillon Innovation Studio.

Walmart Inc. president and CEO Doug McMillon will be the featured speaker at this year’s spring commencement ceremony at the University of Arkansas. The university will hold multiple ceremonies over three days, starting May 10, to celebrate around 4,800 graduates.

McMillon will speak at the university commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11, at 8:30 a.m. inside Bud Walton Arena.

Mark Pryor, former U.S. senator and Arkansas attorney general, will receive an honorary doctorate during the university commencement ceremony.

Livestreaming of all ceremonies will be available on the UA YouTube channel.

A Jonesboro native, McMillon earned a bachelor’s degree from the UA in business administration and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Tulsa. He began his Walmart career as an hourly associate unloading trailers. He was named president and CEO in 2014.

From 2009 to 2014, he was president and CEO of Walmart International, and from 2005 to 2009, he was president and CEO of Sam’s Club. He has worked at Walmart for more than 30 years, serving in senior leadership roles in all of Walmart’s business segments.

McMillon is on the boards of directors of Business Roundtable, the Consumer Goods Forum and the U.S.-China Business Council. He also sits on the advisory board of the Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management in Beijing, China.
