Walmart Inc. recently inked a deal with tech startup Ossia to test wireless power technology in hopes of reducing battery costs across its stores.

Walmart said lowering power costs throughout its stores, clubs and facilities is worth exploring given its scale. By testing wireless power transfer from Ossia, Walmart hopes to reduce its dependence on batteries and wired connections for power.

Ossia has developed technology capable of delivering wire-free charging by beaming electicity to devices to deliver the power charge without using any cords or charging mat. The beam technology requires the devices be in range of the transmitters to pick up the charge.

Walmart is the first retailer to test the Ossia beam technology. The retailer said the test is limited for now with the possibility of expansion if the results produce adequate savings.
