Nabholz to rebuild Maple Street at UA

A $2.79 million project to widen Maple Street, between Garland Avenue and Razorback Road, is expected to start this summer and be completed in summer 2019. The segment of Maple Street, which is part of Arkansas Highway 112, will be widened to four lanes, and a traffic signal will be installed at Razorback Road and Maple Street.
The work is part of a larger project to widen Highway 112 to four lanes through the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, said Chris Brown, city engineer. On June 5, the Fayetteville City Council approved Nabholz to complete the road work.
The project also will require approval from the Arkansas Department of Transportation, which is providing matching funds for the project. State and federal money will pay for $2.19 million of the project, while the city’s and university’s share will be $600,000.
As part of the nearly 1.5-mile project, Razorback Road will be widened to three lanes and receive a fresh layer of asphalt, between Maple Street and Leroy Pond Drive. Also, Garland Avenue, between Wedington Drive and Maple Street, will receive an asphalt overlay.
Other phases in the works include adding a fourth lane to Razorback Road, south of Maple Street, and to widen Garland Avenue, between Janice Avenue and the Interstate 49 interchange. The latter project would widen the avenue to four lanes with a median, and work on the 12- to 18-month project is expected to start in about two years.
After work is completed on the Highway 112 segments, including parts of Garland Avenue, Maple Street and Razorback Road, the city will take over maintenance of the improved parts of the highway, running through the UA campus, between I-49 and 15th Street, Brown said.
