A well-known restaurant chain with locations scattered (but not smothered) throughout Northwest Arkansas has proposed its first location in Rogers.

Waffle House, known for its breakfast fare and 24-hour, 365-days-a-year service, is planning to build a 1,756-square-foot diner on West Walnut Street, just east of the Dixieland Road intersection.

A large-scale development plan (LSDP) has been submitted to the city of Rogers for review.

The land for the proposed restaurant is owned by Fayetteville businessman John La Tour, a practicing accountant in Northwest Arkansas and a Fayetteville City Council member.

La Tour acquired the 1.01-acre lot in May 2003 for $145,000. He told Talk Business & Politics-Northwest Arkansas Business Journal he is under contract to sell part of the lot — roughly 0.75 acres — to Waffle House for $375,000. The purchase price equals $11.63 per square foot.

La Tour said the land sale is contingent on the LSDP approval. He said there are some zoning issues to address concerning compliance with the city’s overlay district requirements.

Waffle House is privately owned and based in Norcross, Ga. According to the company’s website, there are six locations in Benton and Washington counties — Springdale (2), Fayetteville (2), Bentonville and Siloam Springs. The newest location opened earlier this year in Springdale at the corner of South Thompson Street and West Grove Avenue.
