Little Rock native Susan Inman announced she will seek the office of Arkansas Secretary of State in 2018. Inman, a Democrat, served as director of the Elections Division of the office previously and has also served as Pulaski County Election director.

Current Secretary of State Mark Martin is term-limited.

Inman said her main goal would be to utilize her experience to protect Arkansans’ voting rights.

“Protecting Arkansans’ voting rights will be my top priority as Secretary of State, and I’ll fight any attempt to restrict our right to vote,” Inman said. “Voter suppression is a real threat and our next Secretary of State must be ready to fight any efforts to make it harder to vote. I’m the only candidate with a record of overseeing elections and protecting voting rights. I’ll put that experience to work for Arkansans as their next Secretary of State.”

In addition to her previous experience, Inman has served as both a county election commissioner and a state election commissioner and has more than 25 years of experience in state and county government. As an appointee of the U.S. Department of State, Inman monitored and observed more than a dozen elections in Eastern Europe and Central Asia over the last 15 years.

“I’ve seen first-hand how other nations attempt to restrict voting rights,” Inman said. “For our democracy to continue to thrive we must have more people voting, not less. As Secretary of State I’ll work to implement new policies to increase voter participation, such as allowing for automatic registration, expanding the use of voting by mail and increasing polling access for voters with disabilities.”

Inman has previously run for statewide and legislative office before. Currently, Commissioner of State Lands John Thurston and State Rep. Trevor Drown, R-Dover, have announced they will seek the Republican nomination for Secretary of State.
