We used to think the social media app Snapchat was for kids — even as commentators touted it as the “next big thing” in marketing — and we certainly aren’t the only ones who thought it. However, through the years the photo/video sharing app has gained traction with adult consumers and has become an increasingly important element of brands’ social media strategies.

In fact, online marketer Jonathan Long, founder and chief executive officer of Market Domination Media, named Snapchat as the top online marketing trend that cannot be ignored. “Snapchat is quickly becoming the social media platform of choice,” he said.

Artist’s Medium
And whom did we recently find classing up the joint? The region’s cultural showpiece, the illustrious Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, has been snapping, under the username crystal.bridges.

One of our staff members followed the account for a week, and the only snap post (For the uninitiated, snap posts are only visible for 24 hours.) was a photo of James McNeil Whistler’s “The Chelsea Girl,” with a tagline wishing the artist a happy birthday on July 11, so it will be interesting to see what the museum does on the platform.

The digital landscape is ever-changing, and no one has a crystal ball to tell the flash-in-the-pan ideas from the wave of the future. But for now, Snapchat is a real contender in the social media realm.
