Local Circuit Court Judge Passes Away

A local circuit court judge died early Tuesday morning at his home.
According to Craighead County Coroner Toby Emerson, Hon. Lee Fergus of Jonesboro died of natural causes at his home. He was pronounced dead at St. Bernard’s Medical Center.
Fergus was a judge for the 2nd Judicial District of Arkansas.
Juvenile court in Blytheville has been cancelled for Tuesday and other circuit court judges will cover Wednesday’s proceedings.
Fergus was a deacon at Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro. Before becoming a circuit judge, Fergus was a district judge in Osceola, primarily working with the juvenile court system. He was appointed to the bench by former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee before he successfully ran for the office.
“Judge Fergus has been a great judge for this district. We’ll miss him,” 2nd Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington said of Fergus. “He’s spent the vast part of his career on the bench working to try to prevent juvenile offenders from ending up in adult felony court.”
Funeral services have not yet been announced.
