Historic Church In Downtown Jonesboro Sold To Local Hospital

No longer will there be a church on Church Street in Jonesboro.

According to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Little Rock, members of Blessed Sacrament Church will begin worshiping in a new building next to their new school on Highland Drive. The current church, located at 614 S. Church Street, was sold to St. Bernards Medical Center after a letter of intent was signed by Bishop Anthony B. Taylor in May.

According to the Catholic Diocese of Little Rock, the church bought 20 acres of land on Highland Drive “as the future site for all its facilities.” The church opened a new 28,000 square foot school in 2011 on the property.

“The sale of the downtown property would provide an opportunity for the parish to complete its move to Highland Drive. Specific construction plans and a supporting capital campaign are being discussed by the parish for presentation to Bishop Taylor,” a statement read.

Blessed Sacrament and St. Bernards are hoped to have an agreement by September, according to the statement.

The church was constructed in the late 1800s, early 1900s and has been one of the most historic buildings in downtown Jonesboro.
