Hobbs State Park to Offer Mother’s Day Cruise on Beaver Lake

Most of us forgot or never knew how Mother’s Day began.  Ann Jarvis was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War.  When her mother died, she began to publically campaign for a national day to honor “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world.”  After years of effort, in 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation creating Mother’s Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers.

Today on this special day we take our mothers out for dinner, and lavish them with flowers and candy.  Why not toss a cruise on Beaver Lake into the mix?  It’s a great feeling to be out on the water with Nature.  Outside of those who permanently nest here, the rest of our migrating bald eagles will have returned to their homes in northern U.S. states as well as Canada.  Instead of bald eagles, our attention will be drawn to new color and growth.  We now notice our bluffs, glades, and lakeside cave openings.  Migrating cliff swallows return. The weather is warmer, and it’s time to watch for hawks, kingfishers, and great blue herons.  The perspective from a boat is like no other.
