Pi Day Draws Competitors To Arkansas Innovation Hub
Todd Jones with ARScene.net has a solid write-up of today’s Pi Day events at the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub in downtown North Little Rock’s Argenta district.
A number of students were winners in the Raspberry Pi Bake-off competition, which only has a tie to cooking in the form of “cooking up ideas.”
Jones explains how the Raspberry Pi competition came to be:
Raspberry Pi are delightful little computers that are inexpensive and can pack quite a punch.
The Raspberry Pi is a series of credit card-sized, single-board computers developed in the U.K. by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools.
Raspberry, it seems, is a nod to other computers, according to event organizer David Hinson, “. . the Raspberry in the Raspberry Pi name is a riff on other fruit named computers (like Apple, etc.).”
Pi refers to the Python language, according to Hinson, one the languages shipped with each computer. While it has no direct reference to Pi Day, Raspberry Pi organizers have decided to use Pi Day as a way to reinforce the brand and educate students in computer science.
